Derbyshire Police and Fire Service Joint Training Centre

A £10 million joint training centre for the emergency services in Derbyshire. Built at the site of the constabulary’s headquarters in Ripley, the premises include a new two-storey training building with an attached three double-bay vehicle garage and associated training buildings for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, along with fire behaviour simulation training facilities, training towers and search and rescue facilities.

BSP Consulting carried out civil, structural, traffic and transportation engineering roles on the scheme for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Derbyshire Constabulary.

A new training building for Derbyshire Constabulary has also been completed on the site. The facilities were built by Bowmer and Kirkland, with other members of the team including Focus Consultants and M&E contractor Neville Tucker.

The impressive headquarters building delivers a modern, fit-for-purpose environment which meets the needs of both organisations. The open plan setting allows employees from police and fire to work side by side, giving them the opportunity to learn from each other and explore joint initiatives and ways of working.

Fire Officer/Chief Executive, Terry McDermott, said: “The Joint Training Centre, really does exude excellence. A purpose built training centre, the first of its kind, provides a fitting environment for our excellent staff to learn their individual crafts and more importantly, where they can come together to train and improve the interoperability between our services.”

We had a lot of hurdles to overcome to get an agreement for the required drainage outfalls. A SuDS scheme was used, including porous paving, discharging to a pond on site with a pumped outfall to adjacent ditch/watercourse.

The firing range had to have protective internal cladding and a very low air flow. Water is recycled and re-used for fire training.

The structure in the fire range was designed to make sure it was suitable for shooting purposes and in line with police training requirements. We had to adopt protective sheets inside the building to make sure it could absorb the bullets. The floors also had to be jointless.
